One of the oldest and most popular iPhone suppliers accused of forcibly using Muslim workers in their factories, according to documents obtained by a human rights organization, added new tests to Apple’s human rights record in China.
The document, obtained by the Tech Transparency Project and shared exclusively with The Washington Post, details how thousands of Uighur workers from the predominantly Muslim region of Xinjiang were sent to work for Lens Technology. The lens also offers Amazon and Tesla, according to its annual report.
“Our research shows that Apple’s forced use in its sales goes beyond what the company has agreed to,” said Katie Paul, director of Tech Transparency Project.
Apple spokesman Josh Rosenstock said the company had confirmed that Lens Technology had not yet received the transfer of Uighur employees from Xinjiang. He said Apple earlier this year had confirmed that none of its suppliers using Uighur staff had been transferred from Xinjiang.
Lens Technology is one of at least five companies linked to Apple’s chain that is now linked to allegations of forced labor in the Xinjiang region, according to human rights groups. Lens Technology stands out from other Apple device providers thanks to its high-end developer and a long well-documented history dating back to the early days of the iPhone.
“Apple does not tolerate coercion at all,” Rosenstock said. “The demand for compulsory labor is part of every supplier we do, including research into surprises. This protection applies to the entire supply chain, regardless of a person’s occupation or location. Any violations of our policies have immediate consequences, including possible business termination. As always, we are very focused on ensuring that everyone is treated with dignity and respect, and that we will continue to do our best to protect our colleagues. ”
Lens Technology did not respond to requests for comment.
In response to faxed questions from The Post, Beijing’s Foreign Ministry called the forced labor in China “non-existent” and accused people of “bad motives”. It said many companies had hired auditors to conduct the investigation, “confirming the lack of‘ forced labor. ’” It did not name company names.
Tesla did not respond to a request for comment. Amazon spokeswoman Samantha Kruse declined to comment. (Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos owns The Washington Post.)
Apple products include thousands of products made by suppliers worldwide. While some providers are smaller or working for Apple through intermediaries, Apple has a very close relationship with its major suppliers like Lens. The company has a code of conduct for suppliers and claims to inspect 1,142 suppliers in 49 countries by 2019, ensuring that working conditions are maintained. Rosenstock said Lens was one of the providers tested. Apple publishes to record its results.
Uighur workers transferred from Xinjiang to other Chinese provinces are often, if not always, coerced or coerced, according to human rights groups and academics who conducted interviews with survivors of the program. The Chinese government does not allow human rights groups to enter the country to question workers or observe conditions. Documents obtained by the Tech Transparency Project do not describe the details of working conditions in the Lens Tech industry.
“There is no way to give informed consent in Xinjiang because the threat of arbitrary arrest is too great,” said Darren Byler, a humanities specialist at the University of Colorado in Boulder who studies Uighur immigrants. Byler said the use of force by the Chinese government in the Xinjiang region has long been established, but has increased since 2017, when the recent campaign to attack the Uighurs began.
